A Walking Tour of Main Street
Presented by The Historical Society of Columbiana & Fairfield Township

"Our purpose for this self-guided walking tour is twofold: We want you to visualize the town as it was in the 1800's by giving you the placement of cabins adn stores and, we want to give you information about buildings standing on Main Street in 2010. Generally the format will be: Date of Construction, Description, Address, and when possible (current resident). HM indicates a Heritage Marker given for the building style unchanged from construction date."
1. Beginning on the Log House Museum porch, look at the Square: 1805 Village Platted by Joshua Dixon. The public square was dirt with a watering trough in the center.
2. Now turn to look at the Log House: 1809 Site of the first Post Office and John Dixon's home. 1820 Site of Abe Foust Cabin Lot 20-21. 1820's The Log House was built on W. Railroad St., by Jacob Nessley. 1975 on September 23 the Log House was donated by the Barrow Family and moved to this lot, donated by the Brookwalter family. 1978 The Annex was added.
3. Walk to North Main Street and cross over to the Main Street Theatre then turn right. Looking east across Main Street you will see: 1808 Site of first blacksmith-Danar Pierce Lot 22, 10-12 N Main St., South Part is now Primitive Gatherings. 1812 Site of first merchant-Jesse Allen & Co. Lot 22, North Part is now (Diversified Services)
4. 1850 Italianate gray sided building HM 14 North Main Street currently housing (G. Fagert, OD).
5. Cross Vine Alley. 1812 Site of Joseph Beal Cabin Lot 25. Currently 18 N Main St. (Warrick-Kummer Funeral Home)
6. Cross Allen Avenue (formerly Strawberry Alley) and continue walking north, look across North Main Street. 1820 Site of David Bishop Cabin Lot 27 (H & R Block)
7. 1822 Site of Jon Rukenbrod Cabin Lot 28 110 North Main St. (Red Brick apartment building)
8. When you arrive at the driveway of the Columbiana Women's Club at 121 North Main Street you will see: 1802 Site of Joshua Dixon Log Cabin located at the back of the lot and the site of Joshua Dixon spring located across the alley behind the cabin. No lot number. 1809 Site of the first brick home in Columbiana built by Joshua Dixon. 1890 Queen Ann building built by Charle Buzzard HM (Women's Club).
9. Turn, walk towards the square, looking right you will see: 1890 Italianate Villa HM. 113-115-117 N Main Street (Barley Twist Antiques and Tea Room).
10. 1904 Beaux Art house built by Grace Wise HM 109 N Main Street (Columbiana Inn Bed and Breakfast)
11. 1836 Site of Dr. George S. Metzger home- this original building is the oldest brick building in town HM. 103 North Main Street (White brick apartment building)
12. Cross Allen Avenue. 1836 Site of D. Stouffer General Store 25 North Main St. (Chase Bank)
13. 1871 Site of first bank--Hollins & Kemble 5 North Main St. (Main Street Theatre)
14. At 1 North Main St., stands an original building built in 1841 by Jesse M. Allen, son of the first merchant. HM 1808 site of Peter Baker Store Lot 38-39. 1825 WM. Moody General Store, north part. 1841 J.M. Allen Store, south part. (Apartments)
15. Cross West Park Avenue and looking to your right you will see: 1808 Site of first tavern--Michael Crozen Lot 46-47 (Parking Lot)
16. 1824 Site of Israel Bean Cabin Lot 48. 1 South Main Street (Edward Jones Investments)
17. 1814 Site of Christopher Hively Cabin Lot 49. 17 South Main Street (Formerly Our Daily Bread)
18. Continuing south, cross W. Mulberry Alley. 1831 site of first Hatter-Jacob Hum Lot 50. 19 S. Main Street (Cricket Box). 1818 Site of Av Batton Cabin Lot 51. 29 S Main St., (Gary Tharp & Associates). 1961 Fire on February 1, at the SW corner of W. Mulberry Alley and S. Main St., destroyed six businesses at a loss of $450,000. Firemen fought the blaze for five hours when the temperature was 18 degrees. Water spray coated firemen with up to half an inch of ice and water hoses became stiff and slippery.
19. At 33-35 S. Main St., stands the Fitzpatrick Building. 1825 Site of the Thomas Dixon Cabin Lot 52. 1920 Fitzpatrick Building Built by Dick and Ray Fitzpatrick included a ballroom upstairs. (Wellman's Flowers)
20. Cross W. Friend St. At 103 S. Main St., is the Holloway Building. 1820 Site of David Fox Cabin Lot 53. 1883 Leonard Holloway & Sons General Store. 1951 this building was remodeled (Columbiana Antiques).
21. 1850 Keller Building built by Sam Fitzpatrick HM 5 S Main St. (Holloway Insurance).
22. 1956 Fire on January 28, 1956 at the NW corner of West Spring Alley and South Main Street, destroyed Tidd's Department Store build in 1903 and the Roller Building built in 1881. Five businesses had been contained in those buildings and the loss was estimated at $400,000. After the fire, it was decided to build a plaza at the rear of the property with a parking lot fronting South Main Street. Currently located in the plaza is Henderson's Office Supply, Hogan's Bakery, and Family Drug as well as a few other businesses.
23. Cross West Spring Alley. 1871 Victorian House built by Jacob Beard. 135 S Main Street (Howard Hanna Realty). HM
24. 1840 Greek Revival house built by J. Vogelson. 139 S. Main Street.
25. 1904 Building built by Charles Fredrick contained five early businesses, North to South: Post Office 149 South Main Street (Post Office, north section). Bundy's Restaurant 151 South Main Street (Middle of Current Post Office). Globe Theatre opened in 1935, 153 South Main Street (south end of current Post Office). Coppock's Dairy/Biery's Dairy, 155 South Main Street (Staff Right, Inc.) Bowles Drug Store/Churchfield's Pharmacy, 157 South Main Street (Lazy Bean Cafe).
26. Cross South Main Street to the First Methodist Church at 210 South Main Street. 1859 Site of the First M.E. Church. 1923 current building was constructed. 1959, addition to the right was added.
27. Looking east you will see the school built in 1864. Today it is occupied by Heartland Christian School.
28. Cross Pittsburgh Street to Grace Church at 140 South Main Street. 1814 Site of School and Meeting House Society. 1822 site of Union Church, first brick church, used by both Lutheran and Reformed Churches. 1867 Lutherans built on South Main Street, Grace Church Est. 1895 additions were added in 1895 and 1967.

30. Continue north and cross East Spring Alley (Felger Ct). 1831 Site of first shoe store-J Vogelson. 118 South Main Street (End of AAA office).
31. 1827 Site of Samuel DeHoff Cabin Lot 4. 118 South Main Street. (North end of AAA office.)
32. 1827 Site of George Fishbaugh Cabin Lot 5. 112 S. Main Street (Holy Yoga).
33. 1889 IOOF Building 106 South Main Street (Shella Bella Restaurant).
34. 1820 Site of Jacob Esterly Cabin Lot 6. 102 South Main Street (R Pizza Place).
35. Cross East Friend Street and continue north. 1830 Site of first drug store, John Young, Lot 7 38 South Main Street. (Paul's Cafe).
36. 1815 Site of Michael Seachrist Cabin Lot 9. 24 South Main Street (Vivian's Gifts and Collectibles).
37. Cross East Mulberry Alley. 1870 Site of Shilling & Co Bank.A bakery was here in the 1950's with a portion of the bakery wall still intact. (Empty Store Front) HM
38. 1858 Eaerly shop--Joseph Hisey. 14 South Main Street (Barber Shop/Retail Shop). HM.
39. 1818 Site of Baughman Cabin Lot 10 (Retail Stores, Ann's Attic)
40. 1814 Site of Jacob Harmon Cabin Lot 11. 8 South Main Street (Kitchen Solutions).
41. At 6 South Main Street. In 1820 Site of Michael Croxen Cabin Lot 12-13. 1834 site of the first permanent physician--Dr. Moses Curry. (Several Attorney offices located here now).
Once you cross the street to the Log House Museum you have completed your tour of Main Street.
